The Image Awards are widening the stage. Let the artists remain specific.

Ten African categories can make room for more work. The opportunity is richer criticism, not another reason to flatten distinct cultures into a single celebration.

An awards category is a small piece of architecture. It tells an audience where to look and tells an artist where the work might belong.

The NAACP's October 21 announcement adds ten African categories to its 58th Image Awards across film, television, streaming and recording. The submission window gives that expansion an immediate practical shape. The online deadline is November 13, 2026, with eligibility governed by the published guidelines.

I welcome the wider stage. I also want us to resist treating a bigger stage as permission to become less curious about what happens on it.

## A continent is not a genre

Recognition can begin with a broad category. Criticism should go further.

A performance deserves attention to voice, rhythm, language and intention. A film deserves an account of what its images are doing. Music should not have to function as a geography lesson before anyone discusses its sound.

The problem with an empty celebration is not that it is too positive. It is that the praise becomes interchangeable. Calling everything important can leave an audience unable to tell one artist's achievement from another.

I want the introductions to be generous and precise. Tell us what the work attempts, where it succeeds and what makes its choices distinctive. Let a comedy be funny, a love song be intimate and a difficult drama be difficult. Not every artistic decision needs to stand in for an entire population.

## The invitation is not the verdict

The NAACP's broader submission announcement also includes a scripted vertical series category. That creates an interesting tension alongside the African expansion: the institution is recognizing changes in both cultural geography and the shape of the screen.

A new format does not automatically produce good storytelling. Neither does an established one. The useful question is whether the form serves the work, rather than whether it looks like the entertainment that used to receive the most attention.

The published process requires work to be submitted before it can be considered. An invitation, a nomination and an award remain different stages. We should describe them accurately instead of turning an announcement into a victory lap for artists who have not yet been selected.

## Build an audience with an appetite

Awards can direct attention. Readers, listeners and viewers decide whether that attention becomes a deeper relationship with the work.

That is where cultural coverage can do something pleasurable and useful: offer an entry point, identify a performance worth noticing, and give people enough detail to develop their own taste.

The expanded categories create an opening. The best response would be coverage with more listening, closer looking and fewer interchangeable compliments.

A wider stage matters. So does giving every artist enough room to sound like themselves.
