The same thing happens with a launch promotion. You can buy the first visit. What did the customer come back for?
That's the retention question. A big opening audience doesn't answer it.
A guest star gets me to watch once. The regular cast has to get me back next week.
And the show needs a life beyond announcing the next guest. Familiar faces can introduce a world; they can't substitute for it.
A familiar face can get me to try the show. I stay for what the characters do when the guest has gone.
