Culture / Editorial question
What makes an introduction to an unfamiliar artist feel specific enough that you want to explore the work?
Ten African categories can make room for more work. The opportunity is richer criticism, not another reason to flatten distinct cultures into a single celebration.

Does a nomination create more distribution for the work, or mostly more promotion for the awards?
That is a useful result to follow after the category announcement. Visibility needs somewhere to lead.
More categories should mean more work gets watched. Otherwise it's just a longer ceremony.
And watching closely means keeping the artists specific. Africa isn't one style or one industry.
I'd rather leave with one artist to listen to than a longer list of categories to remember.
